Midland Tool Saves Lives

In December 2019, our President, Brian Boychuk, was diagnosed with adult acute myeloid leukemia (AML). When AML occurs in the body, a patient’s bone marrow will produce mutated stem cells. With fewer healthy blood cells, the body cannot fight infections or stop bleeding.

When disease affects marrow so that it cannot function properly, a marrow or cord blood transplant could be the best treatment option. The most common type of transplant for AML is an allogeneic transplant. An allogeneic transplant is when healthy blood-forming cells from a family member, unrelated donor or umbilical blood unit are used to replace the unhealthy ones in the patient. Before transplant can occur, the patient must receive chemotherapy (with or without radiation) to kill the unhealthy cells. Once chemo is complete, the donor stem cells can be given via an intravenous catheter (IV). The transplanted cells travel to the inside of the patient’s bones, where they begin to make healthy blood cells. The entire process, from chemo or radiation until hospital discharge, can last weeks to months, depending on upon severity of disease or difficulty matching with a donor.

For more than 35 years, NMDP, formerly Be The Match, has managed the most diverse blood stem cell registry in the world. This organization works to save lives through cell therapy, including Brian’s transplant; he was matched with a blood stem cell donor through the program.

For the month of April, Midland Tool & Supply has committed to giving $20.20 of sales from three of our top-selling Milwaukee power tools to NMDP. Join the cause! https://www.midlandtool.com/promotions/givetonmdp
